Hi Kris!

Welcome to the Forum!  The water report looks most impressive!  I have used bottled spring water for brewing to date as we have well water that is not the best tasting.
If I may ask, what is CHOPS?  Again, welcome to the Forum and Good Brewing to you!

Does anyone know where to get water tested?  As mentioned in another post, I have been using bottled Spring Water.  But that is getting close to $.80 per gallon.  As I prepare to go to all grain brewing, it's obvious the water cost is getting a little pricey.  By getting the well water tested, will that give me an idea to what type of filter to use and/ or treatment?  What characteristics are best for brewing?

I get my water tested by Ward Laboratories in Nebraska.  It's cheap, only 16.50 plus shipping.  There website is great and they have a special form catering to homebrewers.

They're fast too.  I ups'ed my water last Thursday from Frederick, MD and just got my latest water report this afternoon.  I'm planning to get it tested every season for a couple years so I can get a curve of each of the important minerals.

Here's the Winter report:

pH 7.8
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Est 217
Electrical Conductivity, mmho/cm 0.36
Cations / Anions, me/L 3.0 / 2.9
               ppm
Sodium, Na  - 18
Potassium, K  - 2
Calcium, Ca  - 32
Magnesium, Mg  - 7
Total Hardness, CaCO3  - 109
Nitrate, NO3-N  - 0.5 (SAFE)
Sulfate, SO4-S  - 13
Chloride, Cl  - 32
Carbonate, CO3  - < 1
Bicarbonate, HCO3  - 68
Total Alkalinity, CaCO3  - 55

The most interesting aspect of the report is the difference in the sulfate to chloride from the Fall report.  During the Fall the water was slightly towards the sulfate, now the ratio is almost 2:1 to the chlorides.

Everyone brew your malty recipes.

Thank You Kris!

I just sent my request for sample tubes.  As I am on well water I went for the W-9 Test Series.

Well, I haven't even opened the test kit box yet.  I found that WallyWorld has culligan filtered spring water for $ 0.39 per gallon.  With 3 x 5 gallon refill containers, it's cheap!
