This past weekend was our 2nd Annual "Fish-n-Brew" weekend at Rehobeth Beach!  The fishing part was postponed until today due to gale force winds yesterday.  We caught a few Tautog and more than enough Oyster Cracker.  However!!  It gave us plenty of time to sample 7 beers from Dogfish Head, a few from 16 Mile Brew (also out of DE) as well as a few imports.  I'll post in the beer reviews when I unpack my notebook.  I will say the Dogfish Head Chickory Stout was far and away the favorite!

FISH-N-BREW WEEKEND TASTE TESTING

  Our 2nd Annual Fish-n-Brew Weekend was again good fun, even though the fishing was again hampered by weather!  Brews we tasted and our opinions;
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•   OLD DOMINION BREWERY:  “OAK BARREL STOUT”  A Delaware brewery.   Tasted light smoked/ oak flavor, hint of vanilla.  Medium body, light tan head.  Very smooth.  6.1 ABV  Willamette and Cascade hops.  Made with Peated Malts, vanilla & oak chips.

•   BROOKLYN BREWERY:  “BLACK & CHOCOLATE STOUT”  BROOKLYN BREWERY, BROOKLYN , NY  A Imperial Stout style.  Made with two row malts, American Fuggle & Willamette hops.  10.0 ABV  A nose hint of chocolate & alcohol.  A fairly strong body, mild chocolate flavor, dry, alcohol/ mild hop tongue.

•   MENDOCINO:  “OATMEAL STOUT”  Mendocino, California  Seasonal Oatmeal Stout  Medium to full body oatmeal stout.  Mild chocolate & coffee flavor.  Dry finish.  Not bitter.  Not my favorite for this style, but OK for those not wanting a big oatmeal stout.  UK Goldings hops.  6.0 ABV

•   DOGFISH HEAD:  “WORLD WIDE STOUT”  Brewed in Milton or Rehobeth Beach, DE.  Occasional Brew.  This is a BIG Oatmeal Stout, full body, complex flavors with strong coffee & chocolate flavor.  The full flavor does well to hide the 15 – 20.0 ABV!!  This is a 10!

•   TROEGG’S:  “MAD ELF”  Brewed in Harrisburg, PA.  Mad Elf is a Winter Holiday Brew.  Brewed with honey and cherries as well as chocolate malts.  Noticeable but not over powering alcohol flavor.  Semi dry finish with a hint of cherries and alcohol.  11.0 ABV

  • DOGFISH HEAD:  CHICORY STOUT   Brewed in Milton or Rehobeth Beach, DE.  The best Coffee Stout I have ever tried.  Rich coffee flavor comes from the addition of Chicory, a common weed found all over PA.  18 - 20.0 ABV  Super smooth with a lingering Espresso like tongue.  If you like Columbian coffee, TRY THIS BEER!!!

  Our food was a delivery pizza from GROTTO PIZZA, REHOBETH BEACH, DE.
  Great crust, thick tomato sauce and fresh cheese make a great pizza everytime!

  Additional info:  Dogfish Head "World Wide Stout"  $170 / case @ local Distributors  OR    $14 per 64oz drought at the brewpub.  Take all of your growlers to be filled!!  Next trip I'll take 11 growlers and fill up a keg when I get home!!

  Yea it was a good time!  We're heading back down first weekend of December, but just for a overnight, fish and cruise home right after fishing.  Atlantic Liquors just outside of Rehobeth has really good prices on single bottle beers, we'll pick up a dozen or so for a tasting at home.

Cheers!

  In anticipation of our Anual Spring Fishing trip, we went to the Eastern Sport & Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA.  While in Harrisburg, we had lunch at the "The Abbey Bar", Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg . ... Brewing Company 50 North Cameron Street 17101 Harrisburg, PA.  Very cool building/ bar, great food and of course wonderful beer!  I started off with their "Vannila Porter",  Brewed at their Gettysburg location, no specs listed.  A nice mildly hopped, vannila infussed medium bodied porter, very slightly sweet before finnishing dry.  I had the "Tequilla Lime Chicken Quesadilla" along with their Outta Focus Double IPA OG: 19.0, FG: 4.0, ABW: 6.4, ABV: 8.0, IBU: 80.  This is a very smooth IPA, not overly hopped.  I brought home a growler full of it!

  The Easter Sport & Outdoor Show was packed, we parked up on the hill behind Harrisburg Hospital and rode the shuttle to the Farm Show building  Complex.  Had a great time, stocked up on a few fishing supplies, got a good deal on a 10' "Ugly Stik" for fishing at the shore, $46.

  Our Spring trip is scheduled for May!!

Cheers!
